What are my options after losing teeth?

Tooth loss can make you feel self-conscious about your smile. Dental implants can restore that confidence by enhancing your functionality and overall oral health. Choose the longest-lasting, most secure tooth replacement option and start smiling again. Whether you’re missing one tooth or a full arch of teeth, we have permanent replacement options to meet every need.

Dental Implants

Dental implants consist of a metal implant that’s placed directly into your gums and jaw, along with an implant restoration (such as a crown) that permanently attaches to the implant. At Coastal Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, our dentists specialize in dental implant preparation, placement, and restoration.

Implant Dentures

If you're missing several teeth or need extractions, a permanent denture solution may be a great option to restore your smile. With implant-supported dentures, we place 4-6 implants and then permanently fix a full arch of 3D-printed teeth to those implants, allowing you to chew, eat, and talk with ease again.

How It Works:

The dental implant placement and restoration process

Placement

Once you’ve been approved for treatment, your doctor will schedule your oral surgery appointment and provide a surgical plan. During the surgery, your dentist in Virginia Beach will make an incision in your gum tissue to securely place a dental implant in the jaw. Next, the area will be cleaned and sutures will be placed to begin the healing process.

Healing & Osseointegration

Your gums and jawbone will begin to heal once your implant has been placed. After 1-2 weeks, the incision site will be healed, but it will take 3-6 months for the implant to permanently bond with your jaw bone through a process called osseointegration. To ensure you are healing properly, we will see you for a couple of check ups during the osseointegration process.

Applying The Restoration

The final step in the implant treatment process is the restoration. Your restoration, or prosthetic dental crown, will be custom crafted to match your smile and securely affixed to the titanium implant. Once your new tooth is in place, your smile will be complete!

"This was an emergency extraction of a cracked tooth. My general dentist made the appointment and I showed up. I was very pleased that they accommodated me the very next day. Explanation of options and procedures was explained by the Oral Surgeon. Very honest, upfront, and professional. An hour later I was on my way home. Surgeon called me at home 3 hours to check on me. Very pleased with the Surgeon, staff and office. Would highly recommend to anyone."

"Had my wisdom tooth removed here and they did a great job! All the staff were very kind and quick to answer any questions. The procedure only took a few minutes and they did an awesome job. The doctor was very considerate in trying to make sure it was as painless as possible. He also made sure I understood what I needed to do following the procedure clearly and even gave me a follow up call. A very efficient and helpful place if you need any sort of work done like I had."

Dr. Yeh

While Dr. Yeh is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he headed to the University of Pittsburgh for his undergraduate studies, where he majored in Exercise Science. He decided to stay in Pittsburgh to complete his dental training, and it was while he was a student at dental school that he discovered his true passion for all things related to oral and maxillofacial surgery. This motivation allowed him to study under some of the most renowned oral surgeons in the field.

After graduating from dental school, Dr. Yeh headed to Newark to complete a one-year surgical internship at Rutgers University. To further his knowledge, he then completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Nova Southeastern University and Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. During his tenure here, he was able to perform a wide array of oral surgical procedures, including patients suffering from complications from neck and head cancer. He performed so well during his residency that he was eventually named Chief Resident and was selected to give a lecture at the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons national meeting in San Diego.

Of course, Dr. Yeh doesn’t spend all his time in the office. When he’s not treating Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area patients, he enjoys spending time with his family, participating in outdoor activities, and supporting the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Have Questions About Invisalign?

Find Answers Here

If you have minor or moderate orthodontic issues, you are likely a good candidate for treatment with Invisalign. So long as your mouth is free of any oral health issues like gum disease or tooth decay, you will probably be eligible to proceed with treatment. However, Invisalign is not for everyone. Severe orthodontic issues may not be able to be addressed with Invisalign. In these cases, we usually recommend treatment with traditional metal or ceramic braces as they can provide more powerful results. To find out about your options for orthodontic treatment, schedule your consultation today!

While Invisalign trays look very similar to night guards and mouthguards, we do not recommend that you use Invisalign as a nightguard. The clear plastic trays are designed to gently shift your teeth, not protect them. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend that you get a night guard to protect your teeth and go with traditional braces instead of Invisalign. If you wear your aligners at night and notice that they are becoming cracked or worn down, this may be a sign that you are grinding your teeth at night. This will affect your treatment so be sure to let your doctor know right away if you think you might be grinding your teeth.

The cost of treatment with Invisalign is usually comparable to the cost of traditional braces. Every case is different, though, so it’s important to discuss your budget with your doctor. During your consultation, your doctor will consider multiple factors including your needs, your lifestyle, and your budget before helping you decide which treatment to proceed with.

Invisalign aligners are nearly impossible to see when wearing them. This is because they are made out of clear plastic and are perfectly fit to your smile. Your trays will be custom-made trimmed to fit to your gum line for a more seamless look. Plus there are no metal brackets or wires, so you can feel confident in your smile throughout treatment. However, if you eat or drink with your aligners in, they could become stained, making them more visible.

These clear aligners are designed onto a mold of your teeth. A lab technician will apply layers of a photo-sensitive liquid resin to this custom mold. Next, the technician will expose this resin to a laser, curing it into a hard, yet flexible, thermoplastic. This plastic is called SmartTrack®, and it was created exclusively for Invisalign treatment. It’s FDA-approved and contains no BPA, BPS, latex, or gluten.
